On 6th September 2016 Guinness World Records recognised Newby's new one-of-a-kind masterpiece teapot The Egoist, designed by our passionate chairman Mr. Nirmal Sethia, as the “Most Valuable Teapot in the World”, valued at up to $3 million.

The official record event took place at Mosimann’s private dining club in Belgrave Square, London, the site of the oldest jewellery house in the world.

What is The Egoist teapot?

The award-winning teapot was provocatively named The Egoist because it can hold only one cup of tea. According to Mr. Sethia, “This teapot is a tribute to tea provenance and stands in testament to this most ancient, culturally important and beautiful of drinks…

It is hoped this object will help understanding, globally, of the art, heritage and historical and contemporary importance of tea. It will take pride of place in the Chitra Collection, the world’s largest private collection of tea accessories. I am honoured that my contribution to tea heritage has been recognised by Guinness World Records”. It took over 1730 hours of work from an Italian jeweller to manufacture “The Egoist”.

The master used the purest diamonds and rubies to decorate this stunning teapot, all carefully selected by Nirmal Sethia himself. 1658 brilliant-cut diamonds and 386 round brilliant-cut rubies shine with all possible colours of the spectrum, with a centrepiece of a super-fine Thai ruby framed in the shape of a sun. The lid features natural ruby beading and the handle is made of mammoth ivory.

Ownership of the Egoist will now pass to the N Sethia Foundation, which helps fund, among other charitable concerns, the Chitra Sethia Centre for Robotics and Minimal Access Surgery and the Chitra Sethia Autism Centre in Cambridge.
