The excellent quality of our tea is at the centre of everything Newby does. Our commitment not only to maintaining our quality but improving on it is expressed in our rigorous QC procedures. This comprehensive system of checks ensures that our customers enjoy only the best.
We also taste our teas against samples of other companies’ goods to ensure that Newby remains the market leader for fine teas.
The process starts from the tea selection stage - Newby will only choose teas plucked at the prime of the optimum picking seasons from selected gardens in India, Sri Lanka, China and Africa.
With every tea or tisane purchased, Newby’s Quality Control process involves continually testing to ensure compliance with Newby’s Approved Control samples. There are eight stages:
Pre-auction/pre-purchase: we taste hundreds of teas to find the best available.
Pre-shipment: before teas are shipped they are tasted to ensure the shipment is of the expected quality.
Arrival: samples are drawn on arrival at our warehouse for checking.
Hand blend: a blend is cut by hand in |
the tea department to compare to the previous blend.
Blend: a sample is drawn during the bulk blending of the tea and compared to both the hand blend and the previous blend.
Production: samples are drawn regularly throughout the day’s production in the packing facility.
Delivered product: samples of finished stocks are regularly tasted in the various markets where Newby is sold.
Random test: samples of finished goods stock or unpacked teas are drawn for spot checks At each stage in the Q.C. process, Newby’s tea department compares samples of each tea against the approved Control sample, testing that it matches in:
Appearance of the leaf Fragrance of leaf and infusion
Brew – flavour and character of the liquor
Cup – appearance of the liquor
The over-riding principle is that a tea must either match or be better than the Control Sample.
