The Newby Teas Tiffin Cup

Newby Teas Tiffin Cup Winner announced!

The Rt. Hon John Bercow, Speaker of the House of Commons announced the winner of the Newby Teas Tiffin Cup at the House of Commons. The 11 finalists had all prepared their signature dishes for assessment by a panel of professionals and celebrities. The winner was the Jewel in the Crown in Swindon, with their “Chef’s Special” a lamb and pumpkin curry served in a large hollowed pumpkin, which the judges found to be original, seasonal and well executed.

Newby Teas thank the judges for their hard work: Ainsley Harriott, Ching he Huang, Nina Wadia, Hardeep Singh Kohli, Sue Harrison, Dhruv Baker, Lisa Faulkner, Sanjay Anand MBE and Amin Ali.

The Newby Teas Tiffin Cup is an annual competition to select the best South Asian restaurant in England and Wales.

Nominees are selected by their local MPs and this year 74 restaurants were secretly assessed for the competition. Eleven of the best performing restaurants were then be picked to take part in a cook-off event at the Houses of Parliament. Judges included special guest celebrities.

The winning restaurant is awarded the prestigious Newby Teas Tiffin Cup.

The word ‘tiffin’ is given to the containers that hold light, snack-like meals in India. The tiffins or tiffin boxes are made up of three porcelain or metallic round trays with handles and lids in which lunches are delivered to workers.

They are delivered through a complex network of Dabbawallahs, who set off with the dishes after the men have left for work.
These light snacks are often enjoyed with a cup of tea and this practice is still in use in India today.

Newby Teas is a proud sponsor of the 2010 Tiffin Cup. The company has a strong link with India, with its state of the art preservation and packing facility located in Kolkata.

The 2010 Newby Teas Tiffin Cup was launched at the Red Fort restaurant in Dean Street, Soho, one of London’s best known Indian restaurants. The final cook-off will take place at the House of Commons on 9th November.
