Ethical Tea Partnership

Newby has adopted the broad principles of
Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) base code a
standard for all its tier one suppliers. The
base code states that:-

• Employment is freely chosen

• Freedom of association and the right to
  collective bargaining are respected

• Working conditions are safe and
  hygienic

• Child labour shall not be used

• Living wages are paid

• Working hours are not excessive

• No discrimination is practised

• Regular employment is provided

• No harsh or inhumane treatment is
  allowed

And as such Newby requires that all its
suppliers undertake a pledge that they are
operating within the guidelines laid out in the
ETI base code. To further support Newby
Teas (U.K.) ethical trading policy, Newby
Teas has joined the Ethical Tea Partnership.

The ETP is an independent monitoring
organisation that monitors the living and
working conditions on tea estates, with the
aim of making sure that the tea Newby
purchases has been produced in a socially
responsible way. This means that Newby
can now get important information about
particular gardens without the need for the
gardens to undergo multiple assessments
from every tea buyer. This allows inspection
resources to be better targeted and removes
unnecessary costs for tea gardens across
the world whilst ensuring that gardens are
operating within nationally accept standards.

ETHICAL TEA PARTNERSHIP

Drinking tea is a global pleasure. However,
behind each cup of tea lies a much bigger
picture: growing and producing tea provides
a livelihood for millions of people around the
world. To further support Newby Teasʼ ethical
trading policy, Newby has joined the Ethical
Tea Partnership (ETP) a non-commercial
alliance of major tea- packing companies,
working together to promote social
responsibility in the world tea trade and
ensure the ethical sourcing of tea.

The Ethical Tea Partnership believes it has a
shared responsibility to ensure that the
social and ethical conditions involved in
growing the tea that its members buy meets,
at a minimum, local laws, trade union
agreements and some international
standards, and to encourage improvements
where needed. It does this through
independent monitoring of six key areas of
tea estate life: employment (including
minimum age and wage levels), education,
maternity, health and safety, housing and
some areas of basic rights.

ETP is now active in twelve regions that
produce over 70% of world tea exports:
Argentina, Assam (Northern India), Brazil,
China, Indonesia, Kenya, Kerala (Southern
India), Malawi, Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu
(Southern India,) Tanzania and Zimbabwe.
